Power Sources

Arcane

The arcane keyword indicates that the power source of a class or power is drawn from the study of magical energies or a pact with a supernatural creature.
Classes that draw power from the arcane power source are:

Artificer
Bard
Sorcerer
Swordmage
Warlock
Wizard

Drawing on magical energy that permeates the cosmos, the arcane power source can be used for a wide variety of effects, from fireballs to flight to invisibility. Each class is the representative of a different tradition of arcane study, and other traditions exist. Arcane powers are also called spells.

Divine

The divine keyword indicates that the power source of a class or power is the worship of a deity or adherence to a moral code.
Classes that draw power from the divine power source are:

Cleric
Paladin
Avenger
Invoker
Runepriest

Clerics, paladins, and invokers have the Channel Divinity class feature, and can take a divinity feat to channel a deity specific power. Divine powers are also called prayers.

Martial

The martial keyword indicates that the power source of a class or power is martial arts training and physical prowess.
Classes that draw power from the martial power source are:

Barbarian (berserker subclass only, which is also primal)
Bard (skald subclass only, which is also arcane)
Fighter
Ranger (also primal)
Rogue
Warlord

Martial powers are also called exploits.

Primal

The primal keyword indicates that the power source of a class or power is an ancient tradition or connection to the spirits of the natural world.
Classes that draw power from the primal power source are:

Barbarian
Druid
Ranger (also martial)
Seeker
Shaman
Warden

Primal classes and powers were introduced in the Player’s Handbook 2. Characters who use the primal power source draw their strength from the wilds around them. Whether it’s a fierce animal spirit or an ancient spirit that represents the landscape, a primal character draws power from the primitive, primordial power of the world around them. Primal powers are also called evocations.

Psionic

The psionic keyword indicates that the power source of a class or power is the character’s own trained mind and incredible willpower.
Classes that draw power from the psionic power source are:

Ardent
Battlemind
Monk
Psion

Psionic classes and powers were introduced in the Player’s Handbook 3. Psionic powers are also called disciplines.

Shadow

The shadow keyword indicates that the power source of a class or power is submission to the power of shadow and bonding with the Shadowfell.
Classes that draw power from the shadow power source are:

Assassin
Vampire
